Rent-@-Geek Newsletter Fun Stuff and Good News!
February 2006

Hello Friends,

These last three months have been filled with urgent, sometimes ‘scary’ security alerts, requiring Windows patches and user vigilance. We are seeing a surge in virus activity, and we want to offer an oasis from the madness!

As such, we are dedicating our regular newsletters to Fun Stuff and Good News! And, as always, we will continue to provide educational links related to security at the bottom of the newsletter.

Sincerely,
Keith Schiehl

  • Olympics Begin!
    torino

The 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy have begun!

The games provide the opportunity for the world's nations to show their pride and more importantly, PLAY together. Remember how much fun it was as a child to simply PLAY, without prejudice or politics?

    Check out these sites:

    Locals to Watch!

Watch out for Vernon’s Own Tom VELISEK and Drew Nielson in the BoarderCross event.

Watch Crispin LIPSCOMB tear it up in the Half-Pipe (Crispin was an instructor at Silver Star in 2000, and coached RAG founder Keith Schiehl)

    Winter Carnival a Success
    small carnival pic

Our Vernon Winter Carnival Parade crew won first place in the Commercial Division. Our theme, “Eliot Ness and The Unhackables” saw an elite team of technicians enforcing Prohibition on Internet gangsters, responsible for viruses and identity theft. A special award goes out to Angus, the St. Bernard, who made the event extra-special!

    Google Goes Video!
    SupoerBowl

Google launched their improved video content site at the Annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Vegas, with a little help from Robin Williams. The new site provides hours of video content for free viewing and for paid download.

Many old TV favorites, including “Rocky and Bullwinkle” and “Ed Sullivan”, are available for download. Unfortunatley, CBS content such as “Survivor” and “CSI” are unavailable in Canada (broadcasting/licensing restrictions, we guess).

The most fun can be had by browsing videos put up on the site by “ordinary” folks all over the world. If you like forwarding funny emails and videos to your friends, then this site is a must-see.

    Radio and Television Features...
    Media Spots

The Rent-A-Geek Team is in the newspapers, on the radio and television!

Listen to Oldies 1150 in Kelowna at 8:40AM on Monday mornings to hear our new "Geek Speak" segment with Phil Johnson and Howard Alexander. Portions of the live segment are recorded for airplay on Standard Radio (Sun FM) stations throughout the Okanagan. Last week we discussed the Dateline Special on Internet Predators. This week will be talking VoIP.

Shaw Television filmed a segment on Internet Security in our offices on January 3rd. Look for the feature to be presented in rotation on Shaw Channel 11. The segment will also be archived on their website.

Rent-A-Geek founder, Keith Schiehl, has a regular column in the Daily Courier; appearing every other Thursday in the front section. Archived articles can be found on our website.

    How Safe is Your Computer?
    How Secure

The CBC has done a brilliant job of explaining Computer Security in plain language we can all understand.
